Bach's St. Matthew Passion - Worcester Chorus

Date: April 20, 2018

Presented By: Music Worcester

The Worcester Chorus of Music Worcester has been the city's chorus since 1858. Today this semi-professional group of 100+ voices has become renowned for its high level of choral performance. Artistic Director, Conductor, and esteemed Bach scholar Dr. Chris Shepard will lead the ensemble, along with orchestra and soloists, in a unique arrangement by Felix Mendelssohn of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which has only been performed once before in the U.S. The St Matthew Passion is the second of two Passion settings by Bach that have survived in their entirety, the first being the St John Passion, first performed in 1724. Many composers wrote musical settings of the Passion in the late 17th century. Like other Baroque oratorio passions, Bach's setting presents the Biblical text of Matthew 26–27. Mechanics Hall is uniquely suited to present such a performance, with its elegant setting and wonderful acoustics.
