Since 1985, the ArtsWorcester Biennial has exhibited a range of the region’s best visual art. In June of 2021, the Nineteenth ArtsWorcester Biennial will open at ArtsWorcester, 44 Portland Street, Worcester MA. Beth C. McLaughlin, Artistic Director and Chief Curator at Fuller Craft Museum, will serve as the juror.

The winner of the Sally Bishop Biennial Prize will receive a $1,000 cash award and a solo exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum during their 2021-22 season. This partnership, now in its third iteration, provides the winning artist with an important museum credential while placing their work in conversation with world-renowned artists in WAM’s collection. Previous winners of the Sally Bishop Prize include pen and ink artist James Dye (Exploring the Myths of James Dye) and painter Susan Swinand (Nature Imagined by Susan Swinand).

Beyond the Sally Bishop Prize, an additional $2,000 in cash awards will be given at the discretion of the juror. The first one hundred and fifty artists submitting work to the Biennial will receive a complimentary, one-year individual membership to the Worcester Art Museum, courtesy of their Members Council.

The registration deadline is Friday, April 16, 2021, and all entries must be made online. Current ArtsWorcester membership is required to submit. A $15 fee applies to each work submitted, with a maximum of three works per artist. Fees must be paid online at the time of submission. If you would like financial assistance with Biennial fees through our Pay It Forward Fund, please contact

There will be two rounds of jurying for the Nineteenth ArtsWorcester Biennial: one online and one in-person. Artists will be notified of the status of their artwork(s) in the first round by May 5 and must bring their artwork to ArtsWorcester by May 16, 2021. Artists will be notified of final decisions by May 19 and any artwork not accepted must be picked up by May 23, 2021. ArtsWorcester cannot accept or return work by shipment.

Submission Guidelines:

  • ArtsWorcester membership is required for submission. Membership fees are non-refundable.

  • Each artist may submit three works for consideration, and all entries must be made online.

  • A $15 fee applies to each work submitted. Payment must be made online at the time of submission. If you would like financial assistance with Biennial fees through our Pay it Forward Fund, please contact

  • Artwork must be original, completed within the last five years, and not previously exhibited at ArtsWorcester. For example, a monoprint or screen print is permitted, but a giclee print of a painting is not.

  • Two-dimensional artworks must not exceed 48" in any direction, including frame.

  • Three-dimensional artworks are limited to 90" in height, and no single element can exceed 50 pounds.

  • Artworks suspended from the ceiling are limited to 50 pounds.

  • Video artists are responsible for providing their own viewing and screening equipment for the duration of the exhibition run.

  • Works must be exhibition-ready with framing and wire as appropriate. Alternative hanging methods (suspended from the ceiling, installed with magnets, etc.) must be tested prior to submission to ensure successful installation, and required hardware must be provided.

  • If accepted, work must be delivered in person or by proxy. ArtsWorcester cannot accept or return work by shipment.

  • Artworks not accepted in the second round of in-person jurying must be picked up following the second notification.

  • Artists receive sixty percent of each sale made through our galleries.

The solo exhibition of the artist winning the Sally Bishop Biennial Prize will take place in a museum gallery to be selected by WAM. Works exhibited at WAM that are not already owned by others will be labeled courtesy of ArtsWorcester (in addition to any other gallery representation held by the artist) to facilitate sales. Should the works shown at WAM require frames, matting and framing will be the responsibility of the artist. To meet professional standards for security and display, WAM requires that frames are in good condition and of sufficiently high quality that they can be safely attached to the wall using cleats or mirror plates as needed. The artist will transport their work to and from WAM.
