Massachusetts Symphony 40th Annual Holiday Pops Concert at Worcester's Mechanics Hall

Date: December 14, 2019 at 8PM

Presented By: Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra

The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, Led by Myron Romanul and Jorge Soto, will present its 40th annual Holiday Pops Concert at Worcester's Mechanics Hall on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 8PM. This year's presentation celebrates four decades of this remarkable holiday show that has sold-out for the last 39 years.  This year's performance will be Worcester's only Holiday Pops Concert featuring a full symphony orchestra along with Irish Step Dancers, a 100-member combined chorus, a superb vocalist and exceptional piano soloist, and a visit by Santa, all in a setting with cabaret tables.

Featured performers will be dancers from the Murphy Academy of Irish Dance, soprano Jane Shivick, a combined chorus composed of The Salisbury Singers and students from Anna Maria College and Assumption College, as well as Mr. Romanul as pianist in a performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Other works on the program will feature classic symphonic and holiday music by such well known composers as Anderson, Handel, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. Traditional audience sing-alongs of favorite holiday gems will round out the program.

Patrons will be able to purchase refreshments during the evening. Patrons seated at cabaret tables on the floor can be served at their tables. Patrons seated in the balcony can enjoy their refreshments in Mechanics Hall's Boyden Salon. Commenting on the extraordinary tenure of this annual celebration, Symphony Executive Director Paul Levenson said that a number of patrons have been coming to this performance for well over 20 years, mainly because the programming features a combination of traditional and fresh approaches to the holiday season.

Conductor Myron Romanul is a grammy-award winning musician who for years was touring piano soloist with the legendary Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Jorge Soto is a protege of Los Angeles Philharmonic Conductor Gustavo Dudamel, is on the faculty at Boston's Longy School of Music,  and has led orchestras throughout South America. Vocalist Jane Shivick is renowned in this area for her artistry and has appeared numerous times with Conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. The Murphy Academy of Irish Dance is based in Grafton, MA and is led by award-winning choreographer and teacher Bridget Murphy. The appearance of Irish Step Dancers at this year's holiday pops follows a long-line of dance artists that have performed  at this show with the Massachusetts Symphony during the past four decades, among them AmDans Theatre, American Dance Heritage, The Berkshire Ballet, The Boston Conservatory Dance Theatre, Aerialist Gina DeFreitas, The Jeannette Neill Dancers, and Project Movement Dancers.
