POW! WOW! Worcester

Date: August 16, 2019 - August 23, 2019
  • Worcester, MA

POW! WOW! Worcester will return this summer August 16-23 featuring workshops, nighttime illustration projections, an artist talk and live podcast all with a focus on community development, diversity and arts education. Lineup features muralists, cartoonists, screen-printers and other artists with a unique set of skills and perspectives.

Thirteen artists from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds will assemble in Worcester to activate walls and open spaces at Burncoat Middle School, Clark Street School, Lincoln Street School, Electric Haze and Great Brook Valley over the course of a week.

“POW! WOW! Worcester continues to evolve each year in response to economic, cultural and societal shifts in the city,” said festival director Jessica Walsh. “From stimulating walkability and helping to improve public safety in year one to engaging youth and encouraging neighborhood pride in years 2 and 3, this year our committee felt it was important to focus our attention on a community that is often overlooked,” she continued. “We’re excited to partner with the Worcester Housing Authority to activate Great Brook Valley and area public schools within its district.”

“Great Brook Valley is a community that is rich with history, culture and diversity,” said Alex Corrales, WHA Executive Director.  “We are pleased to work with POW! WOW! Worcester to bring these wonderful murals to the neighborhood for all to enjoy.”

The roster of artists include: Lillipore (LA), Tony Peralta (NYC) y Angurria (Dominican Republic), Jason Naylor (NYC), Wooden Wave (HI), Matt Gondek (LA), Aaron Powers (MA), THUMBS (London), Jeks (NC), Crocpaints (Worcester), Kaplan Bunce (HI) and Balloonski (LA).

NYC artist and second-generation Dominican-American, Tony Peralta, will offer a Screen-Printing Workshop fueled by his love of hip-hop and interest in visual arts and graffiti. As a designer, Peralta has worked with fashion brands such as Sean John, Oscar de la Renta, Republica, B.Makowsky and others.

New to the festival this year is a series of live nighttime projections where London illustrator THUMBS will demonstrate his creative process, a new artistic experience to compliment the ever-changing format of this community festival.
