Our popular Spotlight Concerts feature music selected by the performers and reflect both their musical passions and influences and those of the composers. Brahms originally wrote his towering Romantic masterpiece from 1894, the Sonata in E-flat major, for clarinet, an instrument he discovered at the end of his composing life. Each written in 1919 by violists, Hindemith’s sonata shows the influence of his lifelong passion for early music, while Clarke’s impressionistic piece showcases her virtuosity on the instrument.
