The opening of BirchTree Bread company on Green Street in the Canal District created a trinity of cool in the once abandoned mill building that also houses Crompton Collective and The Canal District Farmer’s Market.
We first came across BirchTree’s humble beginnings, selling fresh bread at the same farmer’s market they now neighbor in their 5,800 square foot bakery in 2014.
When you walk into BirchTree Bread Co. you’ll first notice the abundance of space and natural light. The window lined cafe with exposed beams and spacious flooring is decorated with earthy, natural elements.
An open kitchen adds a lively feel, and makes you feel like you’re part of the action. We even caught the owner making his fresh bread in the back!
The room has excellent acoustics, and each Saturday you can enjoy some live music. Give yourself time to hang out, you may just want to stay all day.
Even though the line was almost to the door with people, it moved fast as we chatted with locals and checked out the unique menu made with local ingredients (and freshly baked artisan bread of course!)
Our fresh sandwiches were simply amazing, with unexpected ingredients coming harmoniously together between light and crusty bread. As the band played; students worked on their laptops over lattes, a family ate their brunch while the kids bounced to the music, and couples sat closely together for an enjoyable weekend morning.
